The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition, by Caroline Alexander

Would also recommend Alfred Lansing's The Endurance ~ more detailed on the journey, I felt it better conveyed the sense of adventure and danger. The Alexander book, however, does a better job of conveying a sense of the personalities of Shackleton and his crew. It is always fascinating to me to see Frank Hurley's film footage of the expedition ~ it was fun seeing that after our discussion.

Sebastian Junger and "War"

Dunno if you guys would like this book or not. Junger is the guy who wrote "A Perfect Storm." He went to Afghanistan and was embedded with an infantry platoon for 15 mos. His book, "War," is as real as it gets without actually taking incoming rounds. He also has a documentary out about the same experience, "Restrepo," which is playing at the E Street Landmark downtown. Restrepo is the name of the outpost where the platoon was posted and it was named after the unit's medic, widely admired and loved, who was killed in action.
